The College Cost Reduction and Access Act (CCRAA) provides much needed relief for attorneys struggling to pay off their hefty law school loans. The CCRAA includes two components: income-based reduction, which is a reduction of monthly loan payments for qualifying federal loans for any attorneys with low salaries and high debt, and loan forgiveness after ten years for attorneys working in the public sector, which includes government, district attorney’s offices, the courts, and private nonprofit organizations. Last month, the U.S. Department of Education released a new Employment Certification for Public Service Loan Forgiveness form to assist borrowers in tracking their qualifying employment and qualifying payments as they work toward earning loan forgiveness. Use of this new form should make the process for securing loan forgiveness easier for attorneys working in the public sector.
If debt relief under the CCRAA is of interest to you, contact the Financial Aid Office or Jennifer Friedman, Director of the Public Interest Law Center (PILC) at Pace.
